India’s skipper Rohit Sharma faced a challenging time during the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) in Australia, struggling both as a leader and a batsman. He missed the first Test due to paternity leave but joined the team for the second match. While India secured a win in the first Test in Perth, they faltered in the following games.
Rohit’s performance was underwhelming, as he managed to score only 31 runs across three Tests, averaging a mere 6.00.
Following his poor run, former Indian cricketer Sunil Gavaskar criticized Rohit’s batting technique and leadership, even questioning his absence from the Sydney Test.

BCCI’s Response and Ranji Trophy Participation
Following India’s series defeat in Australia, the BCCI reportedly instructed players to participate in the ongoing Ranji Trophy. Rohit Sharma, Yashasvi Jaiswal, and Shreyas Iyer represented Mumbai, while Shubman Gill played for Punjab. Meanwhile, Rishabh Pant made his return for Delhi.
Veteran batter Virat Kohli also marked his comeback to the Ranji Trophy after 12 years, and all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja impressed for Saurashtra with a 12-wicket haul.
