The Maha Kumbh Mela 2025, currently unfolding in Prayagraj, has drawn millions to the banks of the holy Ganga, earning global attention. Amid this colossal congregation of devotees, saints, and spiritual leaders, one figure has garnered significant attention: Abhey Singh, popularly known as IIT Baba. The 36-year-old engineer-turned-spiritual leader gave up a promising career to embrace spirituality and join the Juna Akhara.
IIT Baba’s unique approach to spirituality, using visual aids like diagrams to explain complex ideas, won him a large following, with over 3 lakh Instagram fans. However, his recent controversial video, where he referred to the tradition of worshiping parents as gods as a “Kalyug trap,” has sparked intense debate, further fueling his rise as a social media sensation.
Expulsion from Juna Akhara
The controversies surrounding Abhey Singh escalated when it was confirmed that he had been expelled from the Juna Akhara. According to reports, the decision stemmed from his alleged disrespect toward senior gurus, including Mahant Someshwar Puri. A member of Juna Akhara dismissed IIT Baba’s connection to the group, stating that he had never been formally initiated. The member remarked:
He was a vagabond, not a sadhu. He used to say anything on TV. He was thrown out.
IIT Baba’s Response to Allegations
Abhey Singh has denied the accusations, accusing the Akhara of spreading false information. In a recent interview, he claimed:
They are spreading rumors because they think I’ve gained popularity and might expose something about them. They’re claiming I’ve gone for secret meditation, but that’s nonsense.
Rejecting rumors that he fled the Akhara, he clarified that he remains present at the Maha Kumbh Mela and dismissed allegations as baseless.
Drug Allegations and Mental Health Concerns
Reports from the Akhara suggested that IIT Baba’s frequent media appearances were affecting his mental health, leading to what they described as “inappropriate” remarks. Some seers also accused him of drug use, prompting the Akhara to conclude that his departure was necessary.
In response, Abhey Singh vehemently denied these claims during an interview with AajTak, questioning the credibility of those making the accusations. He also addressed allegations by Mahant Someshwar Puri, who claimed to be his guru, asserting that there was no guru-disciple relationship between them.
“Puri tried to present himself as my guru only after I became famous,” Abhey Singh clarified.
The Ongoing Debate
The IIT Baba controversy has sparked widespread discussion online, with opinions divided over his unconventional teachings and the circumstances of his expulsion.
