If you’re brave enough to dive into the ocean, where all sorts of fierce creatures roam, it’s probably a good idea to know how to defend yourself—just in case.

But after watching a chilling simulation that demonstrates shark attack survival techniques, many people are saying it sounds easier said than done.

I’ll be the first to admit, I have never gone head-to-head with a shark. In fact, I count myself pretty lucky that I’ve managed to avoid any shark encounters altogether.

That being said, if I ever found myself in that terrifying situation, it would be nice to have a fighting chance.

And that’s exactly what this viral simulation aims to teach.

A few months ago, YouTube channel Zack D. Films uploaded a video demonstrating how to survive a shark attack, but many viewers aren’t convinced they’d be able to pull it off.

All the same, do your best to avoid tussling with a shark

The animation places a man deep in the ocean, visually walking viewers through the steps they should take to defend themselves against a shark.

The narrator in the video said: “Punching and kicking the eyes and gills can be an effective way to defend yourself during a shark attack.”

“This can deter the shark from continuing its attack.”

So basically, try your best to aim and strike while being completely submerged. Simple, right?

The narrator continued: “Also maintain strong eye contact as much as possible as this may cause the shark to lose interest.”

“If it does lose interest, slowly and calmly back away towards safety keeping your movements smooth to avoid splashing.”

That might sound easy in theory, but between the sheer panic and thrashing water, keeping your cool long enough to land a precise hit on a shark’s gills seems nearly impossible.

People on social media seemed to agree, with many doubting their ability to successfully defend themselves in such a situation.

“Trying to punch underwater is like trying to throw a punch in your dream,” one YouTube user commented.

“Punching and kicking underwater is way too f**king hard. It’s like if pillows had fists,” another added.

“My man really just said If you want to survive a shark attack…. you gotta fight the shark, lol,” a third person joked.

“I will calmly think about your advice when I’m being eaten,” another viewer chimed in.

But hey, it’s always better to have some knowledge and never need it than to find yourself in the water, wishing you had paid more attention in shark self-defense class.
