A flight attendant has revealed some important but often-overlooked things that passengers should avoid doing while on a plane.

We all know the basic rules of being in public—like keeping quiet at the movies or not talking through a theater performance.

But when it comes to air travel, there are a few unspoken guidelines that many people aren’t even aware of.

Luckily, flight attendant Tommy Cimato has stepped in to share his top tips on what to avoid on your next flight.

Tommy, who posts as @tommycimato on TikTok, shared the “five things” he believes every passenger should keep in mind while flying.

First on the list: never touch the flush button or lever in the airplane lavatory with your bare hands.

Explaining why, Tommy said: “It’s honestly just super unsanitary and it’s pretty gross. So when you flush, use a napkin or tissue that’s in the lavatory.”

His second tip? Always make sure to drink plenty of water.

“Stay hydrated,” he advised. “You want to have about 16 ounces for every flight that you go on. Keep that in mind.”

That makes sense, but the next tip might surprise many travelers since it’s something most people do without even thinking about it.

Apparently there’s ‘five’ major things you should ‘never’ do on an airplane

Tommy warns against sleeping or leaning against the airplane window.

He explained: “You’re not the only one who’s done that and you don’t know how many people or children have wiped their hands or other things all over the window,”

The fourth tip is to avoid wearing shorts on a flight. Tommy notes that you can’t always be sure how clean the seats are, so wearing long pants gives you a layer of protection against germs.

For his fifth and final piece of advice, Tommy reminds passengers to always let the flight crew know if they feel unwell.

“We are there to help, so if you need food, water or an air sickness bag, please let us know,” he said.

People quickly reacted to Tommy’s tips, sharing their own thoughts on what they had just learned.

One TikTok user commented: “This proves that you guys dont clean inside the plane.”

“Don’t they sanitize after every flight?” another added.

Tommy responded: “The ground crew does all the plane cleaning, they try their best to keep it clean but this is just in case if it gets missed!”

A third person chimed in: “I’m gonna wash my hands after I flush anyway.”

“I use my foot to flush seriously,” another shared.

Someone else admitted: “I do not like to even rest my head on the head rest.”

And finally, one person summed it all up: “JUST CLEAN THE DAMN AIRPLANE.”
